Greetings from the MDM Honduras Management team. We thank you for your support and investment in the lives of the children, families, and communities of Honduras. As we navigate the current COVID-19 crisis, we want to keep all our partners apprised of the situation, both stateside and in Honduras. We will try and keep our updates short and concise but feel we feel the need to share with you some of the challenges.

Honduras: Since the beginning of the month, we started educating our students on the hygiene and other protocols following the advice from the World Health Organization, our government and healthcare providers to avoid getting infected with the COVID-19. On March 10, the school system decided to shut down for the following two to three weeks in an attempt to avoid spreading the Coronavirus among their students and staff; Universities moved to an online mode to continue with classes, where possible. The rest of the schools gave assignments to the students to work at home during that period.

The number of reported cases in Honduras has risen over the last few days, as it has done almost everywhere else. The government of Honduras has taken aggressive action to slow the spread of the virus and has instituted a curfew where people can go out only on certain days and hours to get medicines and food staples. This week banks will be open on two days and at certain hours.

At MDM, to meet government guidelines, we adopted a modified schedule to continue to serve our students, making sure they have access to the internet to work on their assignments. We are in contact with local community leaders to coordinate efforts to respond to an emergency in case there’s an outbreak of this disease at the mountain. At present, our students and their families are doing well, staying at home and working on their assignments.

Stateside: Last week, the management team decided to cancel all short term mission teams through the end of June. The remainder of the teams for the year are in a “wait and see” mode at this point. Canceling teams has a significant impact on our ministry, so we asked that you pray for our wisdom and insight as we navigate this crisis. At present, we have 28 children that desperately need a sponsor.

Those children are posted on our website. Please share this with your friends and fellow church members.

Going Forward

In closing, we are going to send out periodic updates so that we can keep everyone in the loop. This crisis is going to be a challenging year, but we are not the first to endure hardship for the sake of the Gospel. In Paul’s final words to young Timothy, he said, “….endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. (II Tim 4:5) Pray for us as we pray for you that we might all fulfill our ministry.
