Mountain of Blessings Sponsorship/ Afterschool Program
Sponsorships are at the core of MDM Honduras programs, providing an educational scholarship and afterschool program that helps children and at-risk youth overcome the financial and academic barrier that interrupts their formal education. Sponsorships are awarded to students with leadership potential to continue their academic education at local schools and to further their development through the MDM afterschool programs.
Students become eligible in Kindergarten and can continue receiving their scholarship as long as they are enrolled in school, provided they meet academic achievement guidelines and actively participate in MDM programs. Scholars come from families with disadvantaged backgrounds, with average income levels on the mountain of about $500 per year and the average education level for the mothers at 4th grade.
In 2016, MDM will have 83 returning students and 10 new students, bringing the total number of active scholarship recipients to 93. Since 2002, the Sponsorship/Afterschool Program has grown from 9 students to 93 in 2016.
Sponsorship: The children MDM supports are separated into three categories: Primary Education Sponsor K-6th, Secondary Education Sponsor 7th – 9th, Higher Education Sponsor 10th-University. The average cost for children to attend school is $600 per year.
MDM sponsorships will cover the cost of uniforms, shoes, books, backpacks, school supplies, computer lab, and the afterschool program with homework assistance, tutoring and spiritual formation classes. Further, sponsorship includes the daily transportation to Tegucigalpa, high school and college text books, lab fees, and meals.
For any amount donated you will become a Scholarship Fund Sponsor to cover additional costs of the children’s education but will not be assigned a specific child. Contact us today for more information or to apply for a sponsorship.
